Understanding Common Pediatric Emergencies

Dental emergencies can happen to people of any age, but there are some that are particularly common in kids. Here are some of the most common pediatric dental emergencies:

  • Loose or knocked-out teeth
  • Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
  • Food or non-food objects lodged between teeth
  • Tooth infections cause painful, worsening toothaches
  • Deep cuts to the tongue, lips, or cheeks
  • Pulled-out or damaged fillings and crowns

If you think your condition counts as an emergency, you’re probably right! So give Sidekick Smiles a call for same-day emergency dental care in King of Prussia. Dr. Deep and our superhero dental team will fly to the rescue and help your child get back to their daily routine right away!

The Importance Of Immediate Dental Care

The sooner you get care, the sooner you can get your child out of pain and back to their daily routine. You can also prevent their condition from getting worse. For example, if you get help for an infected tooth right away, Dr. Deep may be able to save it with a pulpotomy or root canal. But if you wait too long, the tooth may be unsavable and may need to be extracted.

This also means that getting emergency care saves you time and money. You can eliminate the need for costly, complex treatments and multiple trips to the dentist. So don’t wait. We offer same-day care for kids at Sidekick Smiles, so give us a call now and schedule your little one’s visit with Dr. Deep immediately.

Dealing With Pediatric Dental Emergencies – Step By Step

1. Call our office ASAP

First, call Sidekick Smiles. We typically have a few emergency appointments reserved for patients every day, so we are usually able to offer same-day care for our patients in King of Prussia. Our team will fit you in for a visit with Dr. Deep as soon as possible!

2. Recover tooth or dental work (if applicable)

If your child has lost an adult tooth, recover it and grab it by the top (crown). You can replace it in the socket or put it into a container of cold milk to keep it moist. Time is critical if your child loses an adult tooth. It must be replaced within 30-60 minutes for the best results.

If your child pulls out a filling or crown, recover it and put it into a plastic baggie. Bring it with you to their appointment at Sidekick Smiles. In some cases, Dr. Deep may be able to use it to repair their tooth more easily, otherwise he’ll place a new filling or crown in the area.

3. Stop bleeding

If your child’s mouth is bleeding, you can apply a clean paper towel or cotton ball to the area to absorb blood. Blood flow should slow within a few minutes. Replace the paper towel or cotton ball as needed.

4. Treat pain and swelling

Over-the-counter medication like acetaminophen and Motrin can help with pain and discomfort. While both may be similar, keep in mind Motrin has anti-inflammatory properties which can be more useful at times. We also recommend applying an ice pack to the cheek near the affected area. This can help numb the pain and reduce swelling, too.

5. Come to Sidekick Smiles right away

All of the above steps are just temporary solutions to keep your child comfortable until they can visit Dr. Deep. So don’t delay. Come into Sidekick Smiles as scheduled so that your little one can get the care they need to get out of pain, prevent complications, and get back to their daily life.

How Parents Can Help Prevent Dental Emergencies

Sometimes, accidents happen. There’s always a chance that your child may injure their mouth or break a tooth, and there may not always be anything you can do to stop it. Still, there are some steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of dental emergencies:

  • Athletic mouthguards – Lots of dental injuries happen during contact sports like soccer, hockey, lacrosse, football, and even basketball. If your child plays sports, a custom-fitted mouthguard will help protect their teeth. Mouthguards can also protect your child’s teeth while they skateboard, ride scooters, and participate in other such activities.
  • Oral hygiene & diet – Good dental hygiene helps keep your child’s teeth and gums healthy. A nutritious diet that’s low in sugary snacks and drinks also helps strengthen teeth and reduces the risk of things like cavities, tooth infections, and gum disease
  • Six-month checkups – Routine teeth cleanings and oral exams at Sidekick Smiles are the best time for Dr. Deep to look for hidden oral health issues. If your child doesn't visit the dentist regularly, they may develop undiagnosed oral health issues that could lead to a dental emergency, such as tooth infections.
